This is a Great Little Home Server around the same size as a standard computer case but with in built slots for up to 4 hard drives. this little server is a great start for users that want a purpose build peace of hardware. What you i mean by purpose built ? Well simple this is marketed as a server, not as a PC kit, bare bone, or single board computer. simply it is a hardware built to be a server.

My Experience

So my experience with the HP Proliant Micro Server N40L is that ask you can tell from the paragraph above been great, The server is small built to be place on the end of a desk or small table, Running mostly quiet with a small hum about the same as a laptop at idle so not very loud at all. I have install a few different operating systems but settled with Xen server in the end due to the ablity to run virtual machine with dynamically.

The Cost

When i got my HP Proliant Microserver N40L in 2015, They cost around £300 or so pounds (GBP). How ever now the cost has come down a few bit, you can not pick one up on amazon where i got my one original link above but there is still light you can pick on up on ebay second hand for a cheap price making it will with in the price range of the amateur tech geek. opening many doors for users to have fun with.
